Fordham University was founded in 1841 as St. Johns College (unrelated to St. Johns University in Queens, New York City). The School of Law was founded in 1905 and renamed Fordham University in 1907. Fordham University has three campuses: Rose Hill in the Bronx (1841-), LincolnCenter in Manhattan, New York (1961-), and Marymount in Tarrytown (2002-).
Fordham University was originally a comprehensive university with both liberal arts and sciences. Victor Hess, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics (1936), taught there (1938-1956). Later, due to financial and religious reasons, the school stopped recruiting PHDS in mathematics, physics and chemistry and closed its medical school.
