Oxford Brookes University traces its roots back to the creation of the Oxford School of Art in 1865, and was renamed Oxford Polytechnic in 1970. In 1992, it was accredited by the Higher Education Council and granted the status of a university.

The University Student Union organises a large number of social and recreational activities, helps and represents students. The Student Union also houses shops, bars, and a year-round job centre. With the support of the Student Union, there are 65 student-run clubs and societies in the university, covering a wide range of interests, such as volunteer work, photography, religion or politics.
