The University of St. Paul (French: Universite Saint-Paul) is an English-French bilingual Catholic Pontifical university, which merged with the University of Ottawa in 1965. It is located in the city of Ottawa, the capital of Canada.

In 1848, Monsignor Joseph-Bruno Guigues, the first Catholic bishop of Ottawa (then known as Bytown), established an all-boys college in a small wooden building behind the Cathedral Basilica of Notre-Dame. Soon, space ran out, and in 1852 Bytown College moved into a stone mansion on Sussex Street, then known as the Academie De La Salle. In 1856, the college moved again, to Wilbrod Street, to six company addresses donated by Notary L.-T. Besserer. It was later renamed the University of Ottawa.

The university has been entrusted to the Mission of the Virgin Mary for the past century and a half. In August 1866, the university was granted a civil charter passed by the government of what was then known as the Province of Canada. On February 5, 1889, Pope Leo XIII issued a papal declaration and endorsed it. In 1965, the missionary section of the University of Ottawa was separated from other general secular disciplines. The spin-off became the University ite Saint-Paul. At one point, the Ontario government wanted to accommodate both the University of Ottawa’s Christian background, but the new school better suited the needs of the city’s Catholic community.
