The University was founded in 1209 by a group of lecturers who had fled the University of Oxford to escape fighting.
Cambridgeshire was born in the 12th century when Franciscan, Benedictine and Clothesian monks came to settle in the flat, damp marshes.
In 1209, two Scholastic philosophers at Oxford University were convicted of murdering a prostitute and sentenced to hang by an Oxfordshire court. In protest, Oxford teachers stopped teaching for a time and left. Some of them came to Cambridgeshire and founded the University of Cambridge.
Around 1225, the teachers of Cambridge elected a master from among them, whose powers were approved by King Henry III, and hence the autonomy of the university. Not long after, in 1233, Pope Gregor IX approved it, a ecclesiastical privilege that Oxford did not enjoy until 1254, and the edict of Henry III and his heirs ensured the monopoly of the two universities. Oxford and Cambridge were the only universities in England for six hundred years until the 19th century. Nowhere else in Europe does this kind of monopoly exist. Like Oxford, the university of Cambridge did not have its own house at first. They teach and live in rented houses, wherever there is space. The university students lived in the hostel from the beginning, supervised by the owner.
